Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just another holiday story. Although the book begins and ends with the Christmas season, it offers many other family experiences (making Valentines, new neighbors, new puppies) to which children can readily relate. This charming book would make a very fine read-aloud for teachers to use in their K-2 classrooms, and is also appropriate for independent readers in grades 3-5. The story offers many opportunities to pause and ask children, “What do you think will happen next?” or “Has this ever happened to you?” The bittersweet ending rings true and presents another springboard for discussion.
Mrs. Babb is a life-long New Jersey resident and says that although she was not a particularly good student in school, she has been a voracious reader all her life. She believes that reading gave her the tools to write her first book at age 77.
